Real Time X-Radiography

Real-time X/Radiography has a significant advantage over the more conventional method of film type X/Radiography in that the radiographic film is replaced with an electronic capture media that provides a near instantaneous visible image. This image can then be stored electronically and, if required, readily transmitted to multiple destinations for analysis without distortion or loss of detail. The Real-time system particularly lends itself to the rapid and cost effective inspection of relatively small ‘one off’ items or batches of a variety of test pieces where there is a need for fast and effective X/Radiographic inspection. Accordingly, Real-time Radiography has proven to be an essential and versatile tool for both development and production inspection of castings, machined components, assemblies, and weldments in a wide range of configurations and materials.

The images of the test piece can be evaluated at the same time that it is being processed or, alternatively images may be saved digitally for review at a later time as well as for archiving. Processing times are generally greatly reduced, the manipulation of the test piece may be preprogramed or performed remotely at the control panel to optimize inspection areas and the development time inherent with film radiography is removed. In addition images may be enhanced without loss of information to ensure comprehensive coverage of the test piece. In the digital format, the images can be readily used in presentations and reports.

Whilst maintaining the essential Non Destructive Testing requirement for integrity, Real-time radiography represents an efficient and reliable method for component testing whilst offering the cost effectiveness demanded by the various industries of today.

Although Real-time (Digital) X/Radiography has many benefits, it will not be suitable for all applications.
